Water Filled Glass (WFG) is a start up from Britain. Dr. Matyas Gutai is the founder and Fazel Ganji Kheybari , Daniel Gabor Schinagl are co founders of this patent technology. The technology uses panes of glass filled with water which use sunlight to provide a heating and cooling system which saves significant amount of energy. The aim of this technology is to make heavily glazed buildings more sustainable. According to their estimates it can reduce energy bills by approximately twenty five percent.

The windows contain a thin layer of water between panes of glass. Heat produced from sunlight and other radiation is absorbed due to the layer of water. The warm water is pumped trough sealed pipes at low pressure to other areas of the building through an underfloor system. Due to the absorption of thermal energy WFG limits the solar heat gain of a building. It thus reduces the need for air conditioning in hot climates. They have completed two prototype buildings using the technology namely 'Water House 1.0' (A small cabin in Hungary) & Water House 2.0' (A Pavilion at Feng Chia University in Taiwan).

WFG claims that since it uses off the shelf glass and parts it is easy to manufacture and also does not increase the carbon impact of construction. A monitoring device is fitted to clean the water automatically with maintenance checks required once in a year. In cold climates triple pane windows are used in the water filled glass system in which the outer cavity is filled with Argon insulation to prevent the water from freezing during winter. The water can be heated up to 40 degree Celsius and it is possible to connect the system to a conventional heat pump or a boiler. WFG has also developed a retrofit technology in which this system can be fitted behind existing windows without having to demolish the windows already in place.

WFG in Summer

During summers WFG uses its water layer to absorb heat before it reaches indoors. The same heat can be reused by the mechanical system leading to additional savings.

WFG in Winter

During winter the water layer is heated which improves thermal comfort and thus reduces the overall energy consumption of a building. The heat source can be supplied in different ways. It can be reuse of stored heat , ground heat or through a heat pump.
